Le comitat d’Istrie (en croate Istarska županija) est le comitat le plus occidental de Croatie. Son territoire correspond à une grande partie de la péninsule d’Istrie.

La côte du comitat d’Istrie fait 445 km de long ; 539,9 en comptant les îles. Une petite partie de l’Istrie appartient au comitat de Primorje-Gorski Kotar. Le point le plus élevé est Vojak, 1 401 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer, dans les montagnes Učka.

Le comitat d’Istrie est habité par plus de 205 000 personnes, soit 4,65 % de la population du pays. La densité de population est de 73 hab./km², et l’âge moyen des habitants est de 40,2 ans.
Le dialecte employé quotidiennement est le tchakavien, et l’italien est reconnu comme langue officielle minoritaire.
En 2001, il y avait 206 344 habitants, répartis de la manière suivante :

- 14 284 Italiens ;
- 8 865 Istriotes ;
- 6 614 Serbes ;
- 3 077 Bosniaques ;
- 2 032 Albanais ;
- 2 020 Slovènes ;
- 4 014 autres ou inconnus ;
- 13 110 non déclarés.
Jusqu’à la Seconde Guerre mondiale, l’Istrie avait une grande communauté italienne autochtone. Aujourd’hui, on trouve dans cette région une petite communauté d’Istro-Roumains, qui parlent l’istro-roumain.
