Strongylocentrotus purpuratus

  • Photo: Laura Francis - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Central Library.

  • Leyend: A common resident found in kelp beds, rocky shores, and coral reefs is the sea urchin. It has a healthy appetite for organic material and feeds on kelp as pieces drift by. Sea urchins like this Purple Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) can be harmful to kelp forests and can destroy reefs when their populations multiply rapidly and overpopulate an area. They damage kelp forests by chewing through kelp holdfasts in search of food.
Attribution information, such as the author's name, e-mail, website, or signature, that was once visible in the image itself has been moved into the image metadata and/or image description page. This makes the image easier to reuse and more language-neutral, and makes the text easier to process and search for. Commons discourages placing visible author information in images; if you do not wish for this image to be used with this information removed, and it is not public domain or under free use terms, you may request that it be deleted.
