Michael Whelan, né le 29 juin 1950 à Culver City (Californie), est un peintre & illustrateur américain de Science-fiction et d'heroic fantasy.

Son père était technicien dans l'aviation, ceux qui donnera au jeune Michael sa passion pour les progrès des voyages aériens et spatiaux.[1]

Il a étudié au "Rocky Mountain College of Art" à Denver. En 1974 il continue sa formation au "The art Center college of Design" de Los Angeles.
