La fantasy est un genre littéraire et par extension il définit un genre d'illustrations représentant les univers de fictions de fantasy.

C'est illustrations abordent les sujets tel que Préhistorique, Romain, Égypte, Moyen age, héroic fantasy (épée, elf, dragon, châteaux...), Science fiction, anticipation... Exemple Conan le Barbare est un sujet de l'illustration fantasy.

Ce style d'illustration trouve son origine dans les artistes Préraphaélites, Romantiques, Surréalistes comme : Hieronymus Bosch, Albrecht Durer, Gustave Dore, Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Blake, John William Waterhouse, Paul Delvaux, Fernand Khnopff, Jean Delville, Salvador Dali...
