Stages of the Wilson-Cycle describing the birth, life and end of an ocean

  • EMBRYONIC: break-up of the continental crust (north-east African rift system)
  • JUVENILE: juvenile ocean has opened to a first connection to the world ocean (Red Sea)
  • MATURE: mature stage (Atlantic Ocean)
  • DECLINING: shrinking stage with subductions zones around (Pacific Ocean)
  • TERMINAL: basins, mountain forming and earth quakes as a result from the collision
  • SUTURING: build-up of a large mountain range during a continuing collision process
