Shape of Despair est un groupe finlandais de funeral doom metal qui a été créé en 1995 sous le nom de Raven. Ils changent leur nom en septembre 1998. Leur musique, qui peut être décrite comme lente, atmosphérique, et froide, utilise de la flûte et du violon, avec de très lentes batteries et des grincements de guitare. La musique de Shape of Despair est quelque chose qui ressemble à Skepticism, mais en plus symphonique et avec une meilleure production. Le groupe est signé chez Spinefarm Records.
Le premier enregistrement de Shape of Despair sous leur nom présent était la Promo tape 1998. Ce fut aussi leur premier enregistrement sorti au public, puisque Alone in the Mist n'a jamais été officiellement distribué. Depuis, le groupe a sortit 3 albums et une compilation, et aussi participé en 2006 dans le Tribute album to Skepticism.
