• Réponse: Le nom officiel de l'état est bien Irlande, mais la République d'Irlande est plus clair dans le contexte du football, et bien plus neutre. Par exemple de précédant, voir le nom officiel de l'équipe national d'après le FIFA (République d'Irlande), ou les mots utilisées sur la page wikipédia en anglais.
• Un peu d'histoire: Les deux équipes nationales (nord et sud) se portaient chacun le nom Irlande jusqu'aux années 1950, quand le FIFA est intervenu afin de leur séparer; le FIFA les a appélé République d'Irlande et Irlande du Nord. Ces appellations sont donc officiels dans le contexte du football, et plus neutre dans le contexte de wikipédia.
