[modifier] Le Signpost

Je m'excuse de ne pas avoir repondu a ta question jusqu'à maintenant, puisque le travail d'organisation attirait toute mon attention.

Sur la question d'accepter les soumissions, j'expliquera en anglais pour pouvoir m'exprimer précisément, si ça te va. Right now I'm the one actually assembling the stories on the Signpost page, so in theory I could decide not to include one for some reason. I did state that I wanted The Signpost to be an objective, independent news source. I think it's important, especially in terms of maintaining credibility, that The Signpost try to avoid advocating one side or the other in terms of Wikipedia internal politics (like arguing for or against policy changes).

In practical terms, I'm not going to turn down articles at this point, since I can just edit them in advance if I think that's necessary. What people have given me has been in rough draft form anyway. If somebody did write a reasonably finished article without running it by me and posted it directly on the Signpost page, I might remove the article and let the author know if it wasn't acceptable (unless I could figure out a way to salvage it). If we had an edit war over whether it goes in, I'm sure it would attract attention, and I hope ultimately people would help us figure out whether it fits the community's idea of what The Signpost should be. If somebody wanted to have a Wikipedia-related newspaper with a strong agenda, I think that would be a different project if they want to start it.

[modifier] Une section internationale pour le Signpost?

I have mixed reactions to the idea. One of the reasons I focus on the English Wikipedia, or at least news that affects the English Wikipedia, is because I don't want en:'s Signpost to become the newspaper for all languages, so that people from other languages have to come to en: to read news about their own projects. For example, I decided not to write about the French Wikinews controversy because it's not about English or about Wikipedia.

However, I would be very happy to have help writing articles generally if you want to get some practice. News that's fundamentally global, not just en-specific (like the servers or the MediaWiki software, or Foundation-wide policy issues), obviously needs to be included, if you're interested in writing about any of that. And news from other languages that relates somehow to en:, or can be made to sound interesting from an English Wikipedia perspective, would certainly be welcome as well. The best examples would be from a few weeks ago, when there were articles about the Taiwanese government's new wiki-like encyclopedia and the Brazilian magazine that vandalized en: as part of writing a story.

I do want to help other languages that are interested in starting similar projects. One thing that could also be considered is using Meta to create sort of a global equivalent to the Signpost, with selected news from all Wikipedias and, potentially, other projects too. This might help if a particular language isn't sure that it's ready to start on its own. I know that Sj has expressed some interest in getting something like this off the ground, distinct from the Quarto in its role as an official publication of the Wikimedia Foundation. Also, Elian on de: took a stab at writing a newsletter for the German mailing list (here it is - sorry if you don't read German; Elian does speak French as well as English, I know). And Tomos from ja: says he's been doing something similar there. If all of you work together, it would probably be easier to get going, and of course things I write for en: could be reused or reworked there as well.

The biggest problem is that people don't visit Meta nearly as often. That's part of the reason I didn't start the Signpost there, along with the fact that I'm just not well enough informed about activity outside en: to write about it. --Michel Neige 15 fev 2005 à 21:16 (CET)

I like this project but I'm too rather sceptical if it will work on meta. For a start we could transform the poor meta:Wikimedia news into something more interesting to read (more like the german de:Wikipedia:Kurier, although this has degenerated really into a "Boulevard Blatt" now). But the best approach IMO is to bring the news directly to the people in the local wikis (almost nobody looks on meta) and just coordinate efforts and communication between us better so everyone can pick on news stories from others. --Elian 16 fev 2005 à 01:47 (CET)

Looks like we're all agreed that Meta is problematic, probably more trouble than it's worth. I had a different thought about how to do an international section in the Signpost that might work, and still help get parallel projects started in other languages. Maybe this is more what you really had in mind anyway, and I just didn't get the vision of it right away.

I liked the way Elian's newsletter was set up, usually with just one or two sentences about each item. The Signpost could have just one article set aside for international news (just like one article is currently dedicated to arbitration cases). This article would consist of very short blurbs about each story, really just a sentence or two summarizing them. After each blurb would be a link to the full-length article, located on its own Wikipedia and written in its own language. So the amount of translation required would be minimal.

This way, a language could start its own newspaper slowly, without needing to do more than an article or two per week. The Signpost's international article would serve as a portal of sorts until a language is producing enough content to function by itself. By then it would probably have developed its own central page like the Signpost, and the two could just connect by interlanguage links. I think this would be a decent way to generate traffic across languages, since it seems that quite a few people from other languages are following the English Signpost. --Michel Neige 16 fev 2005 à 18:52 (CET)

Alors, sorry in English: I think your 'admin manual' is very useful. I showed it some ja admins and they are very interested in translation. They say it is very instructive with many snapshots though they don't know French (most of Japanese don't know French well). I suppose if we make the manual multilingualized, it would be more useful for more people. Now I have a plan to make its multilingual version on meta by translation into some major languages (en/es/ja/de, if possible a Slavic language too). Would you like to join its tranlation into English and/or other languages? I think we can create a new page under "Translation requests" and use it as our platform.

Paid by credit card 330 €. I think there's some problem with the registration site because if I click on "pay with a credit card" and then i don't complete the payment form, i'm still registered (that's where the other 2 registration came from). It would be better to close the registration after payment procedure is completed.

I've paid 2 days ago. I will register my friend. On the registration form i selected full conference (50€) + monday outings, and Dormitory (8-12 beds per room; €80). When you go to the shopping cart it says 165€ (x2 330€). Some hidden costs? or something wrong in the registration form?

Hi Notafish, ich habe eine Bekannte angesprochen, den Stadtartikel von de:Büdingen ins Französische zu übersetzen. Sie will Anfang Mai damit beginnen. Ich werde dazu, da sie sich mit der wiki-Syntax nicht auskennt, den deutschen Artikel in Büdingen kopieren, damit sie diesen Stück für Stück übersetzen kann. Tut mir leid mit dem falschen Namen. Ich hatte die Nachricht erst bei Traroth hinterlassen und dann gesehen, dass er seit 10 Tagen nichts geschrieben hatte.
