Description

Vanity of Earthly Love, circa 1570; Oil on canvas; "This is another allegorical painting concerning the brevity of human life. The reclining nude contemplates a skull and a mirror while behind her is an older man who grasps a cupid and an hour glass [sic]. The allegorical interpretation is that Time carries Love away, leaving the woman to contemplate old age and death. The artist was particularly noted for modeling forms in candlelight."
