[edit] Description

A "God's view" map of Milky Way as seen from far Galactic North (in Coma Berenices). The star-like lines center in a yellow dot representing the position of Sun. The spokes of that "star" are marked with constellation abbreviations, "Cas" for "Cassiopeia", etc. The spiral arms are colored differently in order to highlight what structure belongs to which arm. HII regions are marked as dots colored in the same color as their spiral arm. They come in three sizes, measured by the excitation parameter U:

  1. small - U > 200 pc cm-2
  2. medium - 200 > U > 110 pc cm-2
  3. large - 110 > U > 70 pc cm-2

[edit] Method

The original image, Image:Milky Way Arms-Hypothetical.png, was dloaded and rotated by gimp, so that Sun is up, as is custom on Milky Way "God's view" maps. The image is then saved and imported into inkscape, and used as a template for vector editing by hand. Thereafter added:

a. 30° sectors around Sun, named for constellation in that direction in the galactic plane, dbl check!
b. names for MW arms as per YUL89YYZ/Ctachme Checked with [1][2][3]
c. HII-regions registered by radio and optical, as per Krisciunas/Yenne, secondary sources
d. center of galaxy and galaxy bar, Checked with [1]
e. intensity maxima of arms, as per Krisciunas/Yenne secondary sources
