Hubert Howe Bancroft (5 mai 1832–1918), était un historien et ethnologue américain, né à Granville. Il travailla dans une librairie de San Francisco en Californie entre 1852 et 1868, puis il démarra sa propre maison d'édition. Il est enterré dans le Cypress Lawn Memorial Park à Colma. La Bancroft Library de l'Université Berkeley est baptisée en son honneur.
