Michael Jackson a enregistré en studio quatre albums pour le label Motown, entre 1972 et 1975, qui ont eu un succès limité. Après son départ en 1975 et alors qu'il atteignait le sommet de sa carrière avec Epic Records, Motown a réuni quelques chansons inédites ou anciennes dans deux nouveaux albums (Looking Back To Yesterday et Farewell My Summer Love). Après que Michael Jackson ait quitté la Motown, celle-ci a conservé le droit d'utiliser les chansons qu'il a enregistré entre 1972 et 1975 à travers de nombreuses compilations.
