Ce gecko terrestre et nocturne de la sous-famille des eublépharinés est appelé gecko à bandes ou gecko à bandes du désert en anglais (on le rencontre parfois sous ces termes, qui sont de simples traductions). Il a un aspect relativement trapu, avec une queue assez épaisse.

Ce gecko se rencontre au sud-est des États-Unis et au nord-ouest du Mexique, dans un environnement chaud et sec. Son biotope naturel est la prairie, les zones semi-désertiques et désertiques.
