The Taj Mahal was built the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, who died delivering their fourteenth child . The central chamber contains her crypt. It is made of high quality white marble, and the Shah spared no expense building it, searching all over the known world for sources of marble and other gems, going as far as Eastern Europe to find suitable raw materials.The Shah's dedication to construct the tomb of the upmost quality, drained the treasury and later led to Moghul decline.
