[edit] Summary

Sketch for a humorous "trade card" (combination advertisement and business card) for one Theophile Bein (whose first name is ornamentally spelled with a Greek letter Theta), drawn by French caricaturist Adolf Willette ca. 1900. Probably the actual printed cards would have contained additional text.

This jocularly depicts a medieval young woman confined in a chastity belt (though as a matter of historical fact the chastity belt was much more of a Renaissance phenomenon than medieval), and also a highly-caricatured pseudo-medieval man with a ring of keys who has entered by climbing a ladder to the balcony outside her window. The woman is drawn as quite cheerful, despite wearing nothing but her voluminous hair-covering headdress and the chastity belt...

Scanned from an early 20th-century book edited by Eduard Fuchs (probably Die Frau In Der Karikatur, 1907).
