Richard Hoggart (né le 24 septembre 1918) est un sociologue anglais très réputé pour son livre paru en 1957 La culture du pauvre. Ce livre a été interprété de deux manières : comme une dénonciation de la perte d’une culture populaire authentique mais aussi comme un plaidoyer contre une culture de masse imposée par le monde des industries.

Fan de football, il a également réalisé de nombreuses recherches sociologiques sur ce sport.
Il a fondé le centre contemporain d’études culturelles à l’université de Birmingham en 1964. Il a également été assistant directeur général de l’UNESCO (1971-1975) et dirigé le Goldsmiths College de l’université de Londres (1976-1984).
Né à Leeds, Richard Hoggart fait ses classes à l’école de Cockburn et à l’université de Leeds. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, il a servi dans la Royal Artillery et a été démobilisé en tant que chef d’état-major. Il a ensuite été nommé chef du personnel à l’université de Hull (1946-1959), conférencier principal en anglais à l’université de Leicester (1959-1962), et professeur d’anglais à l’université de Birmingham (1962-1973). Durant ses années d’enseignement, il a aussi été directeur du centre contemporain d’études culturelles (1964-1973). Hoggart a été membre de quantité d’organisations dont the Albermarle Committee on Youth Services (1958-1960), the Pilkington Committee on Broadcasting (1960-1962), the Arts Council of Great Britain (le conseil d’arts de la Grande-Bretagne) 1976-1981 ; et le statesman and nation publishing Company Ltd 1977-1981. Il a aussi dirigé le Advisory Council for Adult and Continuing Education 1977-1983, et le broadcasting research unit 1981-1991, aussi bien que gouverneur du royal shakespeare theatre 1962-1988. Il a été témoin expert dans le procès de Lady Chatterley ; dans l’adaptation télévisée pour la chaîne BBC 4 en 2006, l’Affaire Chatterley, David Tennant jouait son rôle. Il a deux fils, le journaliste politique Simon Hoggart et le critique pour la télévision Paul Hoggart, et une fille, Nicola.
